Introduction to Guinea Pigs
The South American cavies, or guinea pigs as they are commonly called, are closely related to chinchillas. They can become affectionate pets, quickly recognizing their owner’s voice and footsteps.
Like the chinchilla, they originally were found in the Andes Mountains. Guinea pigs have been raised in captivity for the past 3,000 years as a food source for some Indian tribes of South America.
Guinea pigs are very sociable animals. They are very tame and can develop a strong bond with their owners. Their relatively long life span (up to 8 years, although 5 to 6 years is more usual) enhances their desirability as a companion pet. Despite their name, guinea pigs are rodents, not pigs. Like real pigs, male guinea pigs are referred to as boars while females are called sows.
