Introduction to Rats

Rats and mice are classified in the same order and family and are similar in appearance. Rats typically are much larger than the common domestic mouse, with adult males reaching weights of 14 ounces or more. Rats have a lifespan of 2 to 3-1/2 years, almost double that of mice.

Rats are intelligent animals and tame easily. They are friendly and can be maintained in social groups, making them good companion pets for most kids and adults. In fact, they are the only rodents that appear to recognize their owners.
